🧠 From AI-curious to AI-confident. Here's the path.

No tech degree required. Just the right starting point.

Laura Ivonne Hernandez confidently in a leadership meeting.

I want to ask you something honestly.

When someone mentions a new AI tool in a meeting — what happens inside you?

For some leaders it’s excitement. For many — if we’re being real — it’s a quiet anxiety. A flicker of I should know more about this than I do. A performance of confidence that costs energy to maintain.

I’ve been there.

And what I’ve learned — from building AI into my own leadership and from working with women in senior management — is this:

The gap isn’t knowledge. It’s practice.

The leaders who feel confident with AI are not the ones who studied it. They’re the ones who started using it — imperfectly, curiously, consistently — until confidence arrived on its own.

You don’t need a course. You don’t need a certification.

You need to start. And then keep going.

Where are you currently on the spectrum from AI-curious to AI-confident?

🚀 AI Fluency & Innovation

This isn’t about becoming technical. It’s about becoming intentional.

The Future-Fit Leader with AI fluency:

Experiments regularly: She tries new tools and prompts without needing to understand them fully first. She learns by doing.

Asks better questions: She knows that the quality of her AI output is determined by the quality of her input. She invests in her prompting skills the same way she invests in her communication skills.

Leads AI adoption in her team: She doesn’t wait for IT to tell her what’s possible. She explores, evaluates, and then guides her team with a human-centred lens.

Innovates with AI: She uses it to brainstorm solutions she wouldn’t have thought of alone. To pressure-test ideas. To see her challenges from angles she hadn’t considered.

Creates AI policies that protect her team: She ensures that AI is used ethically, safely, and in alignment with the values she’s built her leadership on.

Fluency is not a destination. It’s a practice.

And every day you use AI intentionally, you become more of the leader the AI era is asking you to be.

💡 Three AI Fluency Prompts to Build Your Confidence

For learning any AI concept:

“Explain [concept] to me as if I’m a senior leader who is not technical but wants to understand it well enough to make smart decisions about it. Use a real-world example from a leadership context.”

For innovative problem solving:

“I’m trying to solve [problem or challenge]. Give me 5 innovative approaches I might not have considered — including at least one that uses AI in an unexpected way. Then help me evaluate which is most feasible given [my constraints].”

For leading AI adoption in your team:

“Help me draft a clear, empowering message to my team introducing a new AI tool we’re adopting. Emphasise how it amplifies their skills — not replaces them. Keep it warm, practical, and honest about what we’re still learning.”

🧘 Wellness Tip: The Curiosity Practice

This week — replace one moment of AI anxiety with AI curiosity.

When you feel the flicker of I should know this already —

Replace it with: I’m about to find out.

Open the tool. Type the question. See what happens.

Curiosity is the foundation of all learning. And you were curious enough to build the career you have.

Apply that same quality here.

💡 AI Prompt of the Week: The Innovation Partner

For Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude:

Copy/Paste this:

“Act as my AI innovation coach. I want to develop genuine AI fluency and start using AI more creatively in my leadership. Ask me about my current role, my biggest challenges, and the outcomes I most want to improve — one question at a time. Then suggest 3 specific, practical ways I could use AI in my work this week that I haven’t tried yet. Make them achievable for someone building confidence, not an expert.”
