💜 The skill that separates the leaders who last from the ones who leave.

Emotional intelligence is not about being nice. It is about being effective in the most human way possible.

Laura Ivonne Herandez in deep focus thinking.

I want to tell you about a meeting I will never forget.

I had the data. The strategy. The slides.

Everything was right on paper.

And I could feel the room closing down.

Not because they disagreed with the logic. Because they did not feel seen in it. I had built a perfect plan and forgotten to bring the humans along.

That was the day I understood that emotional intelligence is not a soft skill.

It is the hardest skill. And in the AI era, it is the most strategic one a leader can have.

Because here is what AI cannot do, no matter how sophisticated it becomes:

It cannot read the energy shift when someone goes quiet in a meeting. It cannot sense the fear underneath a team’s resistance to change. It cannot feel the difference between a colleague who is struggling and one who is simply disengaged.

Only you can do that.

When was the last time you paused in a conversation and genuinely asked yourself: what is this person actually feeling right now?

Skill #7: Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is not about being endlessly patient or unfailingly positive. It is about being accurate in your reading of yourself and others, and responding from that accuracy rather than from assumption or reaction.

The Future-Fit Leader leads with self-awareness first. She knows her own emotional triggers, her stress responses, her default patterns under pressure. And she manages them with enough consistency that her team experiences her as a stable, trustworthy presence even in difficult weeks.

She cultivates empathy as a strategic tool. She works to understand what her people are experiencing, not just what they are producing. She knows that a person who feels understood will give far more than a person who feels managed.

She creates psychological safety through emotional attunement. She notices when the energy in a room shifts. She names what she sees. She creates space for what needs to be said rather than what is comfortable to say.

🤖 AI Leadership Insight

AI is becoming extraordinarily capable at simulating emotional language. It can write an empathetic email, generate a compassionate response, and produce coaching questions that sound deeply insightful.

But it cannot be present with another human being.

Presence, real attuned emotionally intelligent presence, is your irreplaceable leadership asset.

When AI handles your cognitive load, you have more of yourself available for the moments that matter most. The hard conversation. The struggling team member. The decision that needs wisdom, not just data.

Use AI to free up your capacity. Use your emotional intelligence to fill it with what only you can give.

🧘 Wellness Tip: The Daily EQ Practice

At the end of each day this week, take five minutes and journal on three questions:

What emotion most influenced my leadership today? Did it serve the situation? What would I do differently tomorrow?

This is where emotional intelligence actually grows. Not in training courses. In honest daily reflection.

💡 AI Prompt of the Week: The EQ Coach

For Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude:

Copy/Paste this:

“Act as my emotional intelligence coach. I want to understand my emotional patterns as a leader more clearly. Ask me about a recent leadership moment that I found challenging, one question at a time. Help me identify what emotion was driving me, whether it served the situation and the people involved, and one specific thing I could practice differently next time. Be compassionate and honest.”
